A custom engagement ring is made for one person, to one design. You do not need to live near the jeweller, but you should know what to expect before you pay.

The steps

Start with a budget and a few photos. You do not need a finished idea.

Choose the diamond. Ask for the shape, carat, colour and clarity in writing, and ask to see the grading report.

Review a 3D design. A CAD rendering lets you check the setting, proportions and band before anything is cast.

Confirm the size. Use a ring size guide, and ask how resizing works.

Receive the ring. Ask how it ships, whether it is insured, and what paperwork comes with it.

Questions to ask any jeweller

What is the total price, including taxes and shipping? What happens if the ring does not fit? What does the warranty cover? What is the return policy for a custom piece?
